How to sell 3D prints legally

Short answer: you can sell a 3D print only if the model's license allows commercial use. For most popular designers, that means buying their commercial (“merchant” or “seller”) tier, usually a monthly subscription on Patreon, MyMiniFactory or a similar platform. Then follow its rules on where you sell, attribution and what happens if you cancel.

Not legal advice. Last checked 2026-10-16 across 42 designers.

1. Check the license before you print to sell

Free downloads on sites like Printables and Thingiverse are often shared under Creative Commons licenses. Anything marked NC (NonCommercial) can't be sold. “Personal use” tiers on Patreon also don't allow selling: several designers we track have cheaper tiers that are personal use only, e.g. MatMire Makes and Ginkel3D.

2. Buy the commercial tier

Monthly commercial licenses we track cost $6–$99/mo (median $13). 3 designers offer a one-time lifetime option. Compare them on cheapest commercial licenses and lifetime licenses.

3. Confirm where you can sell

7 designers name Etsy explicitly and 6 allow any platform; the rest don't say. See Etsy-friendly licenses.

4. Follow attribution rules

10 of 42 licenses explicitly require attribution (crediting the designer in listings), for example Mini Monster Mayhem, Bulkamancer Sculpts, Archvillain Games, UNIT9. Most others don't state it, so check.

5. Sell prints, never the files

22 of the licenses we track explicitly cover physical prints only, and the digital files are not for resale or sharing. Unless a license says otherwise, sell prints, not files.

6. Know what happens if you cancel

For most subscription licenses, your right to sell ends when you cancel. 25 of 42 designers state what happens on cancellation; in nearly all of them the license ends with the subscription, and a few allow a short sell-off of already-printed stock (e.g. Ginkel3D: up to 30 days). The rest don't say. Budget for keeping the subscription as long as you sell.

7. Keep proof

Keep receipts and a copy of the terms as they were when you bought the license. Terms change often.

FAQ

Can I sell 3D prints of models I downloaded?

Only if the model's license allows commercial use. Downloading a file doesn't give you the right to sell prints of it; the designer's license decides.

Can I sell prints of Creative Commons models?

It depends on the exact license. Any Creative Commons license with “NC” (NonCommercial), such as CC BY-NC, does not allow selling. Licenses without NC usually allow it but still require attribution.

How much does a commercial license cost?

In our directory, monthly commercial tiers run $6–$99/mo (median $13). See the cheapest licenses.

Can I sell the STL files too?

Usually not. 22 of the 42 licenses we track explicitly cover physical prints only. Treat reselling or sharing the files as not allowed unless the terms say otherwise.

Is this legal advice?

No. This is an independent summary of publicly posted terms. Read each designer's current terms and get legal advice if you need it.
